Tennessee Photo Identification

What can I bring in Tennessee?

Tennessee requires most in-person voters to present an ID containing the voter’s name and photograph that was issued by the federal government or Tennessee state government. A REAL ID is not required for voting.

Expired identification

The state accepts qualifying expired federal or Tennessee IDs. Davidson County publishes an exception for a person voting there for the first time, so first-time Davidson voters should verify the current rule with the Election Commission.

Generally Accepted
  • ✓Tennessee driver license
  • ✓Tennessee Department of Safety photo ID
  • ✓U.S. passport
  • ✓U.S. military photo ID
  • ✓Tennessee handgun carry permit with a photo

03

Absentee by Mail

Tennessee absentee voting is limited to qualifying circumstances. A completed ballot must be returned by mail and received by the county election commission by the close of polls on Election Day.

Important first-time-voter rule

Unless an official exception applies, a person who registered by mail or online may need to appear in person for the first election after registering. Check with the county election commission before relying on absentee voting.

At the Polling Place

Simple rules that prevent problems.

Election officials’ posted instructions control at each location. If you are unsure, ask a poll worker before acting.

01

Use the correct location

On Election Day, use the polling place assigned to your registration. Early-voting sites follow a separate official schedule.

02

Keep campaigning outside

Campaign signs, materials, and solicitation are prohibited inside the polling place and within the marked 100-foot boundary. Avoid campaign apparel and follow poll-worker instructions.

03

Protect ballot privacy

Follow posted rules for mobile devices, conversations, photography, and recording. Never photograph another person or their ballot.

04

Ask before leaving with a problem

If your name, address, ID, or ballot appears incorrect, tell a poll worker. Ask what official voting or provisional-ballot options apply before leaving.

05

Request assistance when needed

Tell a poll worker if you need an accessible voting machine or other voting assistance. Contact the county election commission beforehand for situation-specific arrangements.

06

Review before submitting

Check every selection and ballot page. If something appears wrong, ask for help before the ballot is scanned or submitted.

Special Situations

Get an official answer before Election Day.

I recently moved

A registration does not automatically transfer between Tennessee counties. Update your address and confirm your record.

I have a felony conviction

Eligibility depends on the conviction and applicable restoration process. Use the state guidance rather than assuming eligibility.

I am military or overseas

Different federal and state registration and absentee procedures may apply, including special ballot-delivery options.

I need accessibility or language help

Contact the county election commission before voting to discuss accessible equipment and the assistance available for your circumstances.
